TS Network DataServer lets you share files and programs across a network by moving much of the logic for distributed I/O to the system that holds or processes the data. That greatly reduces network exchanges and improves performance.
Why it matters
Transaction-heavy applications such as accounting, distribution and manufacturing can need 30 to 40 network accesses to process a single transaction. Ordinary file sharing leaves key access and record locking to the workstation, so all of that traffic crosses the network. TS Network DataServer puts the file handling logic on the server instead, which brings:
- Better system performance
- Improved data integrity
Any Thoroughbred-based application, whether written in Thoroughbred Basic, Dictionary-IV or OPENworkshop, can use it.
Platforms and requirements
TS Network DataServer supports Windows, Linux and UNIX servers, and it can be added to an existing Thoroughbred network. You need:
- A client-enabled Thoroughbred Environment (the client side comes with every TS Environment installation)
- TCP/IP networking
Starting with release 8.9.0, TS Network DataServer is not compatible with earlier versions of Thoroughbred Basic and Web Basic.
Components
- Client-enabled environment: Thoroughbred Basic, Dictionary-IV or OPENworkshop, configured to send I/O requests for server data to the server
- Startup program (tsmgr): creates a server process for each client
- Server process (tsserv): handles the requests from its client
To see the server processes that are running, use TBPVIEW.EXE on Windows or the ps command on Linux and UNIX.
How it fits
TS WebServer uses TS Network DataServer to reach application data from the web server. Network performance and data integrity depend heavily on how the network, servers and workstations are set up, so talk to your Thoroughbred representative when planning a configuration.
