Introduction - Setting Up Dictionary-IV

Operating System Support:
UNIX, Linux, and Windows
For specific information, please contact your Thoroughbred Sales Representative.

Before you can begin to create applications using Dictionary-IV, you must prepare your system. Procedures with which you must be concerned include: creating operator codes, providing security, and system configuration.

This section will take you through the steps you should follow in setting up Dictionary-IV.

You can start Thoroughbred Dictionary-IV using one of the following methods:

  • From the Thoroughbred Basic Utilities menu, type ID and press Enter.
  • From Thoroughbred Basic Console Mode, type RUN“ID” and press Enter.

The system displays the Thoroughbred Dictionary-IV copyright screen. Press Enter to continue to the Operator Login Screen. The system prompts:

TSI is the default operator code supplied with the product. Type TSI and press Enter.

0010 DIM ]7$(400);
]7$(77,3)="xxx" !specify 3-character operator code
]7$(228,1)="A";
CALL "IDPUB4",]6$,]7$,]8$,]9$;
CALL "8ZPSYS",]SYSV$;
RUN "ID"

This program logs into Dictionary-IV using the specified operator code, avoids the Dictionary-IV Copyright screen, and opens the operator’s specified master menu. For more information see Operator Information in the Utilities Reference section of this document.

If the operator code has an entry program specified, the program will be executed prior to displaying the master menu.

Select Operator Information from either the Dictionary-IV Control Menu or the Dictionary-IV Utilities Menu.

This option allows you to add, change, or delete operator codes. You can specify the entry and exit programs as well.

Set up an operator code for each user on the system. You may use the default operator code (TSI), and you may add a password.

For more information see Operator Information in the Utilities Reference section of this manual.

Select Security from either the Dictionary-IV Control Menu or the Dictionary-IV Utilities Menu.

This option controls access and restrictions throughout Dictionary-IV (with the exception of operator login). The passwords are in effect only when security is active.

Establishing a system password enables system security. Removing the password disables system security.

For more information see Security in the Utilities Reference section of this document.

Select Terminal Configurator from the System Administration options.

This runs 8NPSD from Dictionary-IV and configures your terminal for Basic. With 8NPSD you can maintain the following Thoroughbred terminal tables:

  • TCONFIG8 - the file holding non-window terminal tables.
  • TCONFIGW - the file holding window terminal tables.

From this option you can add, change, delete, and copy terminal tables. You can also add, change, or delete the user terminal table assignment. These assignments can be used whenever Thoroughbred Basic is executed or only for the current session of Thoroughbred Basic.

If you are running Thoroughbred Dictionary-IV 8.3 and above you should configure your terminals for Thoroughbred Windows (TCONFIGW).

For more information see Terminal Configurator in the Utilities Reference section of this document. Also see the Thoroughbred Basic Reference Manual.

Select Printer Table Maintenance from the System Administration options.

Your printers must be defined in Printer Table Maintenance. This option allows you to create and change the contents of the printer tables, which contain special codes for printer control.

For more information see Printer Table Maintenance in the Utilities Reference section of this document.

Select Printer Assignment from the System Administration options.

You can now associate your printer table with a two-character printer code (LP, P1, etc.). Whenever you print, you may select only from these configured printers.

For more information see Printer Assignment in the Utilities Reference section of this document. For more information on configuring printers for the TS ReportServer, see the VIP Gateway for Windows Reference Manual.

Select Backup/Restore Parameters from the System Administration options.

For more information see Backup/Restore Parameter in the Utilities Reference section of this document.

Select Window Configurator from the System Administration options. From this option you may design the attributes of Thoroughbred Dictionary-IV windows.

Five types of windows can be configured: Menus, Views, Screens, Help, and Editor. A sample of each window type remains on the screen for reference.

Configurable Window Parameters
Window Attributes Foreground, background, reverse video, blink, underscore
Window/Border Colors 16 foreground and background colors
Border Parameters Border type, border/select attributes, paint mode
Special Window Areas Light bars, view headings, field entry

For more information see Window Configurator in the Utilities Reference section of this document.

You may convert definitions from older versions of Dictionary-IV to your new version.

For more information see Dictionary Update in the Utilities Reference section of this document.

Select Installation Information from the Dictionary-IV Utilities Menu.

You can set the default values for the master menu, exit program, and the menu timeout. You can also set Screen and Menu functions.

For more information see Installation Information in the Utilities Reference section of this document.

Select Set Developer/User from the System Administration options.

Setting the internal flag that defines the operator as a developer or user, enables and disables certain system functions.

For more information see Set Developer/User in the Utilities Reference section of this document.

Two special Link definitions are used to maintain the default disk number for data and work files. The DataFileName column in Link UTWRKFIL contains the default disk number for creating work files. The DataFileName column in Link UTDATFIL contains the default disk number for creating data files.

To change these values, select Dictionary-IV Link maintenance. Change the DataFileName to any disk number defined on a DEV line in the IPLINPUT file. For more information about this please refer to the Thoroughbred Basic Customization and Tuning Guide (System Files).
